Ariel Ace (2015): new motorbike from makers of Atom

British sports car manufacturer Ariel - best known for manufacturing the big boy’s go-kart, the Atom - has pulled the covers off its first new motorcycle in more than 50 years.
The Ariel Ace bike will be priced from around £20,000, and will be manufactured in small numbers alongside the Atom sports car at the Ariel headquarters in Somerset.

What makes the Ariel Ace a special motorcycle?

The Ace will build upon Ariel’s relationship with Honda by featuring its 173bhp 1237cc V4 engine and drive system. Instead of focusing on the powertrain’s evidently enormous performance potential, Ariel reckons buyers will be attracted by its bespoke build system – claimed to be a first for a production motorcycle.
Each Ariel Ace will be made specifically to the individual rider’s requirements, and Ariel say there is a large number of customisable options, making each Ace 100% personal.

How the Ariel Ace will be tailor made

Owners will be able to choose from variations such as front and rear suspensions, handlebars,
bodywork, size of fuel tank and even exhausts. The choice of wheels includes a lightweight carbonfibre and aluminium option made specifically for the Ace. Colours, materials and finishes on the bike will also be tailor made.
‘Motorcyclists have a real passion for their machines,’ said Simon Saunders, the owner of Ariel. ‘They like them to be individual, and they want them to be their bike. With the Ace the uniqueness is built in as the bike is produced and each one will be as individual as its owner.’
Building on a system used with the Atom, the Ariel Ace can be upgraded over time at the factory. This is a system that Ariel claims has seen much success with the Atom, with owners choosing to retain their vehicles and upgrade instead of possibly buying into the opposition.

Ariel motorbikes: a history lesson

Ariel’s roots can be traced back to 1870, when it used to make early Victorian bikes. The company prospered for almost a century, but folded in 1970. Biking enthusiast Simon Saunders started Ariel Motor Company in 1999 and began building the Atom, which has much in common with its two-wheeled ancestors.
Back in 1895, Ariel started a relationship with tyre manufacturer Dunlop and it’s been rekindled with the new Ariel Ace; customers can choose their pick of a number of Dunlop tyre options.
Production of the Ace is scheduled to start in early 2015 with only 100-150 to be produced each year.

2014 Honda Valkyrie

2014 Honda Valkyrie

As I write this, there are three hours left on American Honda Motor’s embargo on posting photos or writing about its new Valkyrie—and I’m amazed there’s nothing yet on the Internet. There’s been no speculation about a new Valk that I could find, so you’re probably as surprised as I was when I got these photos of the new model.
The first Valkyrie used a simple formula well-known to American hot-rod builders: take the frame and motor of a big, heavy car and chop away everything you don’t need. That first iteration was built right here in the USA from 1996-2003 and still has legions of fans. It used the flat-six, liquid-cooled 1520cc motor and five-speed gearbox from the old GL1500 Gold Wing (1988-2000), but with a different tube-steel chassis. It weighed in at 682 pounds dry—much lighter than its touring brother. Owner forums for the Valk are still active (hot topic: using a car tire on the rear wheel), and one thing is clear: these folks love their bikes. They handle well (for something so heavy), are comfortable, reliable, smooth, fast and have a heck of a presence—for a while, it was the biggest, baddest cruiser you could buy. “Surely, with this motorcycle,” speculated Motorcycle.com’s Andy Saunders in 1997, “Honda has reached the limit of cruiser size.” How quaint.

Honda killed the old girl in 2004, but that year a limited-edition custom called the Rune arrived—you may remember it. At $27,000, it was kind of a legacy bike, a made-to-order custom designed more to showcase the brand than to dominate the heavyweight cruiser market. Still, it was good-handling and luxurious-feeling, something Editor Edge and I took great pleasure in riding.
Another possible direction was the EVO6. Honda displayed this concept bike at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, and it made a big splash—how can an 1800cc, six-cylinder sporting standard not? It was missing the clutch lever and gearshifter—would the next Goldwing use an automatic transmission?

If anything, the new Valk is a Rune for the masses, as it uses much the same formula, albeit for a broader audience. The frame, swingarm and powerplant are all from the GL1800, but with lighter, more minimal bodywork. A low 28.8-inch seat and blacked-out one-inch cruiser bars scream “cruiser,” but an 45mm cartridge fork, twin-spar aluminum frame, radial tires (130/60-19 in front, 180/55-17 in back), single-sided Pro-Arm with linkage rear suspension and 310mm discs with four-piston Nissin calipers (that look like what Honda used on its sportbikes from the late ’90s to the mid 2000s) all scream out “sportbike.” After all, the GL1800′s Large Project Leader, Masanori Aoki, came from the sportbike side of Honda, developing bikes like the NSR250R and CBR600F3.
All that development nets a bike that weighs in at 750 pounds—154 pounds lighter than the GL1800. Heavier than the original Valk, perhaps, but it does have a lot more power—the GL1800 makes over 100 ft-lbs of torque at the wheel, and the number stays above 90 from 1500 to 5000 rpm—and a six-gallon tank, bigger than the ‘Wing’s.

Other features include removable passenger seat with grab rail, included solo cover, black-out treatment on the frame and engine, LED lighting (everywhere, including the headlight), a multi-function LCD instrument cluster and those big shrouds covering the side-mounted radiators (which duct heat away from the rider). The styling could be controversial, but it is growing on me, and I actually really like that big front wheel.
Pricing is not yet set, but Honda says it will be in the range of $17,000, undercutting the F6B. It should be available in US dealers next spring. I’m also really looking forward to riding one, but maybe not as much as the many Valkyrie fans—Christmas may have come early for them.

The next generation Yamaha YZF R1

The next generation Yamaha YZF R1 has been caught testing in Australia with a speculated output of 233PS!

The upcoming 2015 Yamaha YZF R1 has been caught testing by Australian Motorcycle News at the Eastern Creek International Speedway in Sydney. And according to speculations the next generation of the Yamaha R1 will be offered in two versions of which one will be the standard streetbike version and the other will be the top-spec version for race homologation similar to the Ducati 1199 Panigale S and BMW HP4.

The most interesting speculation is that the Yamaha will prevail with its in-line four-cylinder configuration motor and the higher-spec version is expected to churn out an eye-popping 233PS of power. Although many might dismiss the power figure as farfetched fantasy but once you factor in the fact that Yamaha is planning to make a comeback to World Superbike series, it starts to make sense.
With the new set of WSBK regulation, it is mandatory for manufacturers to homologate higher performing machines for production use and engine modifications on the race bikes will be severely restricted. This means that manufacturers will have to sell a certain amount of high-end bikes that they plan to use for racing; this would result in the consumers getting their hands on bikes that are almost similar to the machine which teams plan to race with.  So it is safe to say that the higher-spec version of the 2015 R1 will be loaded with top-shelf parts for suspension, brakes, exhaust system and wheels.

But this doesn’t mean that the standard version will be a slouch in any means as it is expected to have a power output of around 200PS and will be equipped with a traction control system and electrically adjustable suspension system. The streetbike version of the 2015 Yamaha R1 is also expected to debut with a dual-clutch transmission system – a first for any production Yamaha motorcycle. In terms of styling, from the grainy image one can make out that the next generation of the Yamaha R1 will be heavily inspired from its smaller sibling - the Yamaha R6 but more details on it once clear shots of the bike appear.

Kawasaki z1000

The Kawasaki Z1000 Special Edition unveiled in Europe

For Kawasaki, the party just doesn’t stop. In order to celebrate 30 years of the Ninja, they launched the ZX-14R Anniversary Edition in America followed by the ZZR-1400 Performance Sport edition in Europe. One of their meanest looking motorcycles has now joined the party. The Kawasaki Z1000 Special Edition has been launched in Europe and like other special editions the special bits on this one are mostly cosmetic.

The Z1000 now comes in a special paint job of Golden Blazed Green and Metallic Graphite Gray in comparison to the menacing all black and Black/Orange combo available on the stock bike.  Apart from the paint, the front Showa forks now feature a big piston architecture and can function independently with pre-load adjustability in the left tube and damping duties in the right. A Horizontal Back-link rear suspension makes the rear section clutter-free and offers a more centralized mass to the bike. An Eco Riding light indicator is standard, just like the dual throttle valves, ultra-aggressive die-cast mirrors, full LED Lighting and the rim-striped, lightweight cast wheels. Technically the bike remains unchanged and offers the same 1043 cc inline-4 that delivers 140 bhp at 10,000 rpm and 111 Nm of torque at 7300 rpm and although this is a special addition, ABS is available only as an option.

2014 Honda Forza and Grom Announced

2014 Honda Forza and Grom Announced

No, it’s not an ’80s spy novel—it’s the model names of two new Hondas for the U.S. market.
The Forza is Honda’s new maxi-scooter, a 279cc, liquid-cooled Single that weighs in at 422 pounds ready-to-ride. It gets a CVT transmission, a 14 inch wheel in front (with 13-incher in the back), a 3-gallon gas tank (claimed fuel economy is 68 mpg) and low 28.2-inch seat. Combined brakes are newbie-friendly (ABS adds $500 to the price), and there’s even a 12-volt outlet to charge your phones and gadgets.
The Forza might be aimed at car drivers looking to get into scootering, who want more power than the PCX150, but are intimidated by the strum und drang of the monstrous 541-pound, triple-digit capable, $9270 twin-cylinder Silver Wing. The Forza’s $5,599 MSRP may raise an eyebrow or two, if I know our readers, but it’s actually competitive for the 250-350 commuter-scoot class. And if it handles like the PCX it clearly shares DNA with, it should be a nice ride—we look forward to testing it.

But maybe you want something more like the cheap, fun little Hondas of your youth? Okay—get ready to Grom. As the Gen-Y hipsters Honda is targeting with the Grom might know, a ‘grom’ is surfer-jargon for a younger kid who can really rip it up on a skate or surfboard, apropos for its aggressive naked-bike styling.
It looks like a Ducati Monster somebody left in the dryer too long, but the 124.5cc, single overhead-cam air-cooled Single is a throwback to the Z50…only intended for use on public roads. That means it’s a lot bigger than it looks, though much smaller than other entry-level sportbikes. Wheelbase is 47.4 inches, the seat is a surprisingly high 29.7 inches (though the narrow seat should make it easy for shorter riders to get both feet on the pavement) and ready-to-ride weight (with the 1.45-gallon tank topped off) is a claimed 225 pounds.  Handling should be nimble, to say the least.
